Technology can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when it seems to change every day. But AI doesn’t have to be complicated. There are simple tools that can help us save time, stay organized, learn new things, plan trips, write emails, and make everyday life a little easier. Here are 5 AI tools worth knowing after 50.
1-ChatGPT – Your Everyday AI Assistant
ChatGPT is an AI assistant that you can communicate with simply by typing a question or explaining what you need. You don’t need to use special commands or understand technology. You can write to it almost as if you were asking another person for help.
I started using ChatGPT for simple everyday questions, but over time I realized how many different things it could help me with.
For example: when I am planning a vacation, I use it to compare different destinations. I can tell it what I am looking for, what I want to spend, and what is important to me.
I have even used ChatGPT when I had a problem with my heater, and in this case, it saved me $200
A Real Example From My Life
Instead, I explained the problem to ChatGPT, and it helped me understand that there could be a clogged drain line and explained simple things I could safely check. I went outside, cleaned the line as instructed, and within 10 minutes the problem was solved.
That experience made me realize that AI isn’t only for technology or complicated things. Sometimes it can help me with very ordinary problems around the house.
IMPORTANT: For anything involving electricity, gas, major repairs, or something that could be dangerous, I would always contact a qualified professional; I only try something myself when the steps are simple and safe.
2- Google Gemini – Helpful for Software and Work Questions.
I use Gemini from time to time, especially when I have questions related to software and tools.
For example, at one of my jobs, I was working with ProMass, an older property management accounting software.
I started asking Gemini questions about some features of this software, and I found it really helpful. Gemini could provide me with information and explain the steps in a simpler way.
From my experience, I have found Gemini especially useful when researching software or trying to understand how a particular program or feature works.
Gemini is another AI assistant. Like ChatGPT, you can simply type a question and explain what you need in your own words.
I used Gemini when I was looking for a refrigerator; I wanted something reliable that would last for years. Gemini compared different brands for me and explained the pros and cons of each one, including reliability, common problems, and price.
Examples of questions you could ask Gemini:
How do I do this task in this software?
What does this feature mean?
Explain these steps to me in simple language?
What is the difference between these two functions?
Compare appliances before buying
3- Google Lens – Search With Your Camera
I think this is a great one for Smart Living 50 because it’s incredibly practical. You can point your phone camera at something and use Google Lens to identify it, find information about it, translate text, or search for similar products.
Examples:
. See a plant you like – photograph it and identify it.
. See a pair of shoes or a piece of furniture – find similar ones online.
. Traveling and can’t understand a sign/menu – translate it with the camera.
. Don’t know what an object or part is – photograph it & search for information.
4- Canva AI – Create Designs Without Being A Designer
You can use Canva for things you may normally think you need a designer to create.
Ways you can use Canva AI
. Create Invitations for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations…
. Design a resume using professional templates
. Create photo collages from a vacation or family celebration.
. Create presentations for work
. Create PDFs and guides that look much more professional
Actually, this website itself gives you a perfect example.
I am currently building Smart Living 50, and Canva is one of the tools I can use to create the downloadable guides and PDFs I plan to share on this website . Instead of hiring a designer every time I want to create a guide, I can start with a Canva template and customize the colors, pictures, fonts, and information myself.
Beginner Tip: You don’t have to use every AI feature Canva offers. Start with one simple project, choose a template you like, and change the words, pictures, and colors. That’s often much easier than trying to design something from scratch.
5- Perplexity – Research Without Opening 20 Different Websites
Perplexity is an AI – powered research tool. You can ask it a question in normal language, and it searches for information and gives you an organized answer . One feature I particularly like for beginners is that it shows sources, so you can see where the information came from and open those sources yourself.
Instead of opening many different websites and trying to compare everything yourself, Perplexity can collect information and give you a starting point.
You could ask :
. What should I look for when buying a used car?
. What are the latest airlane baggage rules for my trip?
. What are some free activities in the city I’m visiting? ….
Perplexity is something I would turn to when I specifically want to research a subject and see the sources behind the answer.
One Important Tip
AI can make mistakes, including Perplexity. For important information, especially medical, financial, legal, or safety information, always open the original source and verify it rather than relying only on the AI- generated summary.
You Don’t Have To Be Good With Technology
If you are over 50 and AI feels confusing or even a little intimidating, my advice is simple: start with one tool and one question.
You don’t have to understand how AI works. I certainly didn’t start by knowing everything about it. I learned by using it for things I already needed help with in my everyday life.
Ask ChatGPT to help you plan your next vacation.
Use Google Lens when you see something you don’t recognize.
Ask Gemini to compare an appliance you’re thinking about buying.
Try Canva when you need to create a birthday invitation.
The more you use these tools, the more you start discovering what they can actually do for you.
For me, AI isn’t about replacing the things I already know how to do. It’s about saving time, finding information more easily, learning something new, and sometimes even saving money.
And remember my heater story; sometimes one simple question can be worth much more than you expect.
Start Small
.Pick one of these five tools and try it this week. Ask it something you would normally search for on Google or something you’ve been trying to figure out.
You may be surprised by how useful it can be.
Have you tried any of these AI tools? What do you use them for?
